CAANS Safari – Maasai Mara

The Greatest Show on Earth

By the month of June a gentle wind ripples through the tall red oat grass, and the only animals easily visible are the slow moving elephants and giraffes, or a lone topi standing on an abandoned termite mound. A stillness sits across the savannah and the lions of the Mara lie in the shade of the acacias, waiting in anticipation. One late morning, small specks rise up through the bushes by Sand River and within minutes become clouds of dust. A herd of a few hundred wildebeest swarms its way along and then down the dusty river bank. Some of the herd settles for a few sips of water before the throng returns and takes the thirsty back to the top of the river bank. The migration has arrived. Within a couple of days many herds of thousands of wildebeest are trampling their way through the long grass, snaking their way across to Look-Out Hill and then down to the Mara River.

Many visitors only want to see the river crossings but the true spectacle of the migration is 1,245,000 wildebeest, 200,000 Burchell's zebra, 18,000 eland and 500,000 Thomson's Gazelle filling the entire stretch of landscape. The shifting columns of the herds as they traverse the valleys and the hills can only be watched in awe. There is nothing else like this on earth.

Our representative will recive you at your hotel in Nairobi. You will then be transfered to the Domestic Airport - Wilson Airport (Approx. 30 Min Drive). They will brief you on your safari and are at your disposal to answer any questions you may have.
Once you have checked in, you can have lunch at Dormans Restaurant as you wait for your flight to Maasai Mara (Approx. 40 Min flight time). Dormans became Kenya’s first coffee roaster in 1950. Today they continue to grow coffee, produce, roast and distribute Africa’s most exceptional coffees.
Take off at 1400Hrs and enjoy the views of our beautiful Kenya from up above.
Arrive at Keekorok Airstrip at 1440Hrs and be received by our guide in your private Safari Land Cruiser.

You will embark on an on route game drive as you make your way to your camp.

Check in and enjoy the rest of the evening at leisure.

Wake up for breakfast at the camp.

Head out by 0900Hrs for a full day game drive.

This is recommended because you can drive quite far out to explore the Masai Mara. You will get to go to the migration crossings which is a spectacle this time of the year.

You will have a picnic lunch under a thorn tree on a vantage point. Picturesque...

Continue exploring the Mara and head back to the camp by 1800Hrs.

Wake up early and have breakfast.
Check out from the lodge by 1000 hrs and drive to Nairobi (Approx. 5 hours 30 min drive)
The drive is very scenic as you pass wheat farms, rural towns, drive in to and out of the Great Rift Valley Escarpment and also drive by a dormant volcano, Mount Longonot.
You will pass through Nairobi City and be transferred to the JKIA International Airport for your onward flight.

Dr. Edwin Mogere Message

Jambo!! It is truly an honour to welcome you to Nairobi, a city named after a Maasai word “nairoba” meaning the place of cool waters. We warmly invite you to join us for the 4th Continental Association of African Neurological Societies (CAANS) Congress 2022.

...
It is remarkable what we have achieved as a continental association in these short 8 years since CAANS was birthed to represent Africa and forge our place in the worldwide community of neurosurgeons. In this regard the Neurological Society of Kenya (NSK) and the East African Neurological Society (EANS) both being national societies in the Republic of Kenya, have been at work organizing this biennial congress, hoping to build on and step up from the prior three very successful CAANS congresses.

We plan to have a rigorous scientific meeting led by the scientific committee with Dr. P. Kitunguu and the team and a warm and refreshing social agenda set up by Dr. Wanyoike and team. There are opportunities to enjoy the bountiful safari, game and tourism potential that we have in Kenya. This meeting should invigorate our capability and resolve to deal with the myriad of challenges faced by African neurosurgeons in helping build healthcare offered to the 1.2 billion of our brothers and sisters.

The congress will be preceded by workshops and symposia, and this year we look forward to the AANS boot camp, Neuroanatomy, neurovascular, neuroendoscopic and Spine workshops as organized by Dr. Kiboi and team.

I wish to particularly mention our young neurosurgeons and female neurosurgeons on the continent and reassure them that both the Pre-congress and the scientific programme has been crafted to include their participation and we look forward to supporting them with opportunities to contribute.

Its an exciting time for us here in Nairobi and on that note let me thank all my colleagues in the neurosurgical community for the hard work and support on this endeavour and ask that we keep the momentum toward the end.

To our continental and international partners, we say “Karibu Kenya”, welcome and we look forward to your support in making this congress a notable success!

Sincerely

Dr. Edwin Mogere - Congress President
